At: Santa Monica Pier
Info: www.glowsantamonica.com, 7pm - 7am, FREE
It’s summer time- and that means two things: Beer and Flan. Flan? Alright fine, forget the Flan, it’s over-rated, how about we replace it with say, a party? Let’s say a big summer party? How about a party that goes from 7pm - 7am on your local beach, from Santa Monica Pier to Palisades Park, from the Pier to the sand? No? Not enough for you? Jeez!! How about a revolving Orchestra in a Solar Powered Ferris Wheel? An Art Installation of Glowing Lights floating in the ocean? DJ’s from KCRW and Dublab spinning all night? Over 20 Art Installations on the beach itself and more on the pier? Oceanside restaurants opening late to accomodate the party? How about the fact that it’s completely FREE? If you said “hell yea, lets do this,” to any of the questions above, then we’ll see ya at the party.
KCRW presents GLOW, Saturday July 19th, inspired by the wildly successful Nuit Blanche in Paris, GLOW takes its spirit from the fabled grunion (fish) that live in local waters and come ashore several times a year to spawn in the sand creating a momentary sensation of iridescence. A collection of international artists will transform the iconic Southern California spot into a premier art destination from dusk until dawn, with a dazzling array of effervescent sights sounds and interactive activities.

Hi NTDLAers!
The year is at a midpoint already and it has pretty much amazed me at how quickly it’s flying by. As we roll through summer and (quickly, I’m sure) head into the fall, I thought that this year I would start to fundraise for a near and dear event that is coming up…the AIDS Walk…So, here I am, starting on my fundraising trail and asking you, dear readers, for your support.
The AIDS Walk is going to be on October 19th this year and all donations will benefit those who need support who are living with HIV/AIDS and will also help to fund research for a cure through AIDS Project LA. Last year my friend Jill and I walked and I raised $1175! I would love to raise even more this year and so I’m reaching out to you.
I’ve included a link to my personal donation page at the bottom of the post and if you feel so inclined, I would appreciate your support
I have also started a team this year and if you are interested in joining, please follow the Team Link and we can get you started.
Thank you for your time and your support!
xx

Zohan & Baron: All yo life you hhhhave a dream
Zohan: no, no, no, no, no, you hhhhave a dream
Baron: you hhave a dream?
Zohan: No, no, no, no, no, you want to make the Playoffs sexy so you change yo hair
Baron: what?
Zohan: and your beard, are you a point guard or a point god? I FIX! CUT!
Yes ladies and gentlemen, that pretty much sums it up. It was always his dream to play for his home town, but the mystery surrounding his reasons are whether or not he’s in it for basketball or because he has a side production with Cash Warren (you know, the guy married to Jessica Alba,) in the Hollywood scene. As my favorite sports writer J.A. Adande writes, “who cares?” So what that he has verbally agreed to join the Clippers to be in L.A., rumors were that he wasn’t happy with Don Nelson who wants to give the younger players more time, (and really, Monte Ellis is going to be a star in the upcoming years, but I don’t know if it’s worth benching Baron.) The trigger though, was that The Warriors failed to resign a star for what he wanted, instead, The Clippers gave it to him: $65 M for 5 yrs, (though its only verbal as of now.) Now Baron has a chance to do something the Clippers have not been able to do for a while: no, not go to the Playoff Finals, I mean raise ticket prices, provide an income stream for the team, and bring people to the game- those kind of things.
At the end of the day, with all the All-Stars wising up and realizing that it takes more than one All-Star on a team to win a championship, players are opting out of their deals to take lower cuts and are moving to teams with the next potential Championship win, (for example, what Artest could have done to join the Lakers but didn’t.) So Gratz to Baron, who is above all just an amazing player and deserves the love. Besides, the Clipper Spirits are pretty hot.
If Baron officially signs with The Clippers, an official announcement will be made on July 9th.
And now, Baron being Baron, the good and the, well, you decide ( video #4, directed by Emmanuelle Chriqui from Don’t mess with the Zohan):

Info: $10, 10pm

What would Independence day weekend be without a bit of blood and gore? Exactly! That’s why the Cinefamily is presenting a ton of it with Evil Dead 2, as part of it’s July’s Saturday Night’s Holyf*ckingshit: Gore Comedies Series. For those of you who are not familiar with the Evil Dead Trilogy, it’s not just blood and guts, it’s a ton of comedy as well. Cult icon, Bruce Campbell stars as Ash Williams, the hero who takes his girlfriend to a secluded cabin in the woods, only to accidentally turn her into a deadite by playing a tape with evil incantations on it, which, really, is just an honest mistake, I mean this sort of thing could happen to anybody. But, hey, what are you gonna do about it? Decapitate her? Watch as Ash arms himself with a shotgun and chainsaw.

I don’t know what it is, but Japanese culture is really fascinating to me. Their technology, their attention to detail, the sushi, the manga, the human tetris videos on youtube… all incredible. The surprising thing is that culturally they are so diverse in what they do and yet there are only certain things in this world that you can point and go, “that must be japanese”, case and point, Instant Couture this Sunday at Royal/T
“Royal/T and Eenie Meenie Records present a special appearnace by the members of the L.A. based band, Jean Paul Yamamoto. The group was started by fashion designer/artist/musician Lun*na Menoh, who also designed the adorable maid outfits worn by Roayl/T’s servers, the uniforms at the opening party for the Takashi Murakami exhibition at MOCA and has a dress in the permanent collection of the Victoria & Albert museum in London. Jean Paul Yamamoto is known for combining high fashion, art performance and rock n’ roll theatrics.
For this special event Jean Paul Yamamoto will do a two-hour fashion, costume and improvised sewing performance at Royal/T. During this lively show, Jean Paul Yamamoto will design and make 12 one-of-a-kind T-shirts (100% white cotton) that will be sold for $50 each (cash only).” -excerpt from royal-t.org/news
Fun Filled Fact: The Drummer from Jean Paul Yamamoto is previously from Devo, you know, “when somethings goin’ wrong, you must whip it!”

When I was a young kid, my brother met a kid named Suichi who came from Japan and introduced us to Dragon Ball. At the time, Manga comics were only books and JUMPS, (TV shows were only in Japan.) Dragon Ball was ground breaking, I mean it was funny and comical but as the character grew older it became a drama, a storyline with incredible details and imagination. It was like crack, (click-click-patty-click pancakes!) I could not stop reading them. There was only one problem. My brother and I could not read japanese, but we knew how to get to Little Tokyo and find the shops that sold the books. So we continuously spent our allowance on books, looking them over and over, guessing where the storyline was going. Surprisingly enough, the details to the story were so thorough that one could have a pretty good idea, though not a thorough one, but a really good idea of what was going on. I know, this is getting quite long, but Anime has a huge part in my heart- Macross (robotech), Guyver, Akira, Cowboy Bebop (I’m a huge Shinichiro Watanabe fan), Gundam… the list goes on and on, and even to this day I am a fan of Bleach and Gundam 00.
It’s a 4 day event filled with Anime junkies, fans, artists, music and cosplayers (which, if that’s your thing, then that’s your thing.) And yes this is quite a geeky event, but nonetheless a fun one. Check Website for schedule of events.

Fireworks Spectacular: A Ball at the Bowl with the Dodgers, July 4th
Posted by Nick on June 29th, 2008 filed in Must do, Hollywood Bowl, Festival, Music / Concerts, Food, Upcoming EventsComment now »
Info: 7:30pm, $10 - $114
For the first time in a while, July 4th finally lands on a Friday, which means to most of us, who still have a job, Holiday pay and a day off! The Bowl has a lot of great memories for my family and I; it’s where we used to always go every year for the 4th of July. We used to watch the L.A. Philharmonic play Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture as fireworks shot out behind the bowl while we dined on food and my dad drank his beer. To me, it is the quintessential summer night spectacular- open air, lazy summer feel, watching a musical performance and just knowing that this is what summer is all about.
This year the Bowl will also help celebrate the Dodger’s 50th Anniversary, which, as you may know by now, I am a huge fan of and as far as I am concerned, what I consider the true home team to angelinos. ( and speaking of which, they totally whipped the Angels Friday night 6 - 0!!!) Come celebrate the old fashion way, it’s a lot of fun.

Anvil: The Story of Anvil
Posted by Jaime on June 27th, 2008 filed in Blogged, Festival, Music / Concerts, FilmComment now »
So, last night Michelle and I went to the screening of Anvil: The Story of Anvil as a part of the LA Film Festival at the Ford. I had heard that it was going to be some kind of real Spinal Tap-ish type of documentary about these old guys who had their 15 minutes of fame back in the 80s and then just never “made it” but were still trying. I was like, alright, I’ll go and check this out. WOW. This documentary was an emotional roller coaster. By the end of the screening I wanted Anvil to make it so bad it hurt. Besides being a witty and insightful documentary on the music industry, metal and “the Dream,” Anvil: The Story of Anvil was just an incredible look at the enduring friendship of two people (Lips and Rob of Anvil who met when they were 14 and have been friends ever since) and the love they share for each other as friends and the love they share for the passion of METAL. If you can, check out a screening. Directed by Sacha Gervasi, this is a gem that you seriously don’t want to miss. OH! And the best part about last night was when my face totally melted off when, after the credits rolled, ANVIL came out and actually played a set! Holy shit. It was super awesome. Check out the photos from last night here. Check out clips from the documentary, screenings and buy the 13th Anvil album here.

Will and I went to see “El Rey Del Barrio” as a part of the LA Conservancy’s Last Remaining Seats. The screening was at the Million Dollar Theater on Broadway in Downtown. The theater itself was the first that Sid Grauman (Chinese theater) built back in the early 1900s and has seen many lives. It was great to go and see first hand the beauty and history/heritage of this Los Angeles landmark and really drove home the importance of championing the restoration and the salvation of these important pieces of architectural history. Info: Friday night Midnight show
This week’s Cine-Insomnia installment will feature Alfred Hitchcok’s 1954 thriller Rear Window, a classic movie that has inspired others to make modern day rip-off of it. It’s about a man confined to a wheelchair because he injured his leg in an accident and since it’s the 1954 era, he is pretty much confined to his New York City apartment. As he has pretty much nothing to do all day, he starts spying on his neighbors, which, he soon starts to suspect one of murder—- sound familiar? Does it sound a little bit like a movie starring a certain someone you may have heard of recently? Like a certain Shia LeBeouf? Under a certain movie title of, oh-je-ne-sais-pas, uh, Disturbia? Yea, that one.
