12th Annual Tofu Festival

Tofu Mascot

So… who would have thought? A whole festival dedicated to tofu, I will admit I was pretty skeptical about it, but being bored as I was on Sunday afternoon, I dragged whoever I could and decided to see what it was all about. To my surprise, it was actually pretty fun!

Since I went on Sunday I was unable to check out the Tofu eating contest but instead settled for the Cosplay contest and parade. (Cosplay= the act of dressing up like your favorite Mange/Anime character.) There were lots of food try, trying to figure out where to start was probably the most troubling thing about the event- everything from Pad Thai, to Tofu Tostadas, to grilled lobster meat balls to shaved ice dessert.

We first stopped by the Tofu Margarita booth, no joke, it is as bad as it sounds. Now most of you are saying to yourself, well duh, it was really something you could not pass up just because of the absurdity of the idea. To try to get the taste out of our mouths, we went for tofu pizza and tofu tostadas while we strolled around. After a good meal,we decided we needed a rest, and so we stopped by the Beer Garden hosted by Thailand’s finest Malt: Singha Beer. What better way to spend your food tickets then to spend it on a beer or two… I think we had three each. After refilling on essential liquids, we realized that there was a second side to the festival so we ventured over to find even more food! We rolled on over to the stage to catch the Cosplay contest and then ended our day by checking out the street parade.

Event also included a Wi-fi scavenger hunt , taste-sampling and cooking demonstrations, a Historical view of Tofu at the Japanese History Museum, Tofu eating contest and various limited edition Tofu T-shirts. The event was a great deal of fun; great crowd, interesting things to see, lots of food, beer and desserts. I really enjoyed the experience and had fun walking around Little Tokyo visiting the different shops . An event that celebrated not just Japanese history but the use of Tofu through different cultures and mediums.
