Arguably, hands down, The dopest Art show this year!! Whether you are a member of MOCA or not, this is a “must do!” Not familiar with his name? Not to worry, neither was I. You will though, recognize his work from somewhere, say… like the color coordinated Luis Vuitton Bag collections? “Dobs”? “Wild Flowers”? or for sure you have seen some of his explicit anime and most recently, Kanye’s latest album art.
The Exhibit was awesome, a style that can best be described as psychedelic, meets anime, meets modern art, meets I-don’t-know-what, but just awesome! (As described by a passing women, “well, it’s like psychedelic… well, you know, he’s like Asian and all, so….” … hmm… okay?) We wanted to take some pictures but camera’s were not allowed, but we did accidentally sneak in a few pics here and there.
This show included great detail of every aspect of his work, from minute to pop. Included were: large statue pieces, a gallery of his marketed goods, a mini theater for a video collage, wallpapers, a three piece set of an animated girl that shows her transforming into an aircraft with her “vuh-jay-jay” as the nose of the craft, and even a full on Luis Vuitton Store. It was endless.
Music by DJ Krush, full bars, and a store filled with Murakami goodies. If you want to buy Limited edition stuff like skateboard decks or signed art you better bring the bling and you better cross your fingers cuz they were all gone opening night… we think it was that guy from N.E.R.D.
